The Department of Physics started functioning in the year 1982 by offering the undergraduate programme. Right from its inception, the Department has improved its growth through years consistent with the institution to set high standards of teaching and learning. The Programme has a span of three years spread over six semesters. The learning environment is enforced by earnest endeavours taken to ensure the quality and progress of students. Apart from BSc. The Department also offers a Course in Our Universe for the aspiring students from other Departments as an Open Course. The choice-based course offered by the department is Astronomy and Astrophysics.
The department is enriched by an excellent and experienced faculty. Presently there are three teaching staffs of which two are Ph.D. holders. The former faculty members were also active in research activities and Mr. Satheesh R., the former Head of the Department has undertaken a minor research project funded by UGC. During the last five years, there are 4 international Journal publications and one book chapter to the credit of the Department. All faculty members are encouraged to update and upgrade by participating in Refresher/Orientation courses, seminars and workshops. The department organizes several National seminars and programmes of due significance from time to time.
The sanctioned student strength is 32. A healthy student-teacher relationship is constantly maintained to ensure both the physical and mental well-being of the student community. Students are also encouraged to participate in seminars, workshops, conferences and competitive examinations both within as well as outside the college. Extension activities, Bridge Courses, Remedial Classes, Peer teaching and Student Centric participatory learning ensure the holistic development of students.
A well-equipped and spacious lab is a major attraction of the department. The department also has an audio-visual room facilitated with a glass board which partly supplements the conventional teaching methods. Even though a central library nurtures and satisfies the student reading essentials the department also keeps copies of certain books of core subjects and journal copies which could be used as reference material by the faculty and students.
